To start this off I want to clarify that this isn’t financial advice and I am not a financial advisor. These are my own thoughts and experiences, and are meant for educational purposes.

You may be wondering why there is an article about getting out of the rat race on a survival/emergency preparedness website?

The short answer is that if you don’t have time, energy, or resources then it will make it very hard to build your preparedness plan.

The other day I had the thought that slavery never really went away. The powers at be just got smarter with their tactics.

Read on to see what I mean by this.

Think about what your daily routine consists of?

For me specifically I wake up about 5 a.m. to get prepared to head off to work. I work in the healthcare field and work 3 12hr shifts. These are long days and I am tired when I get home, but I enjoy having the remaining days off.

Some people I know work 6 to 7 days a week just to pay the bills. This is where I came up with the term “modern day slavery”.

If you are working this much just to survive how do you have energy left over to devote to your spouse and family? Or how do have any physical or mental energy to notice the things that are going on in the world around you?

Why are we stuck in this rat race?

There are many different reasons for this. Everyone’s situation is a little bit different. The biggest reason though is that we’ve all been trained this way. You go to work make money to pay your bills and repeat. A large amount of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and the majority of us have not been taught a whole lot about money.

Isn’t it amazing that we can go through all these years of schooling and learn very little about money. In my opinion that is by design. If you keep people ignorant then they are more easily controllable.

Not to mention the thousands upon thousands of ads that we are exposed to everyday. Constantly having the latest and greatest thing flashed in front of our eyes daily, and then there is social media.

We get to see all the fancy stuff and trips all of our “friends” on social media are getting to enjoy. What we don’t get to see is the behind the scenes. Are they working their fingers to the bone to get that stuff or are they up to their eyeballs with debt and stress.

There is a biblical principle that says the borrower becomes “slave” to the lender. Let’s think about this. If you have a debt, you have to work to pay it off. You have no choice, so in effect the lender is controlling your actions. If you have no debt then you have the ability to make your own decisions and be financially free.

Let Me Clarify

To be clear there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a job. I am thankful for my job and what it has provided for my family. What I am against is strapping ourselves down to the point that we are trapped.

As I said above the majority of Americans are one paycheck away from disaster. If the job goes away they are dead in the water. So part of survival/emergency preparedness is being financially prepared.

It is ideal to have multiple income streams in case one suddenly goes away. This is like the prepper motto “two is none, three is one”. What this means is that you need to have at least three different ways to do the same thing. For instance: for heat having wood, a ventless heater, and your furnace.

That way if the other two ways fail you always have the third to fall back on. This should be the same with our finances.

How do we get out of this rat race?

The first thing we need to do is educate ourselves on how money works and the best way to use it as a tool. Strike that. The very first thing we need to do is decide that we don’t want to be part of the rat race anymore.

As mentioned before, some people enjoy it. I am not one of those and want to be out of it and ultimately have time freedom.

For your education I recommend a company called Minority Mindset. The owner of this company/youtube channel does an excellent job at explaining how money works and teaches some of the best ways to use it to become financially free.

For a slightly different opinion you can also check out Dave Ramsey. Me and my wife have personally used his budgeting advice for about 15 yrs now and it has helped us out tremendously. It really helps you see where your money is going.

There isn’t any reason for me to reinvent the wheel and these guys have done a great job at financially educating the masses, so check out there stuff to get educated.

My personal plan

As I said above, I don’t enjoy the rat race and value time with my family. I am not out to have massive houses. My goal is time freedom to do the things I would like to so with my family and my church.

Starting this website was part of my plan to achieve this goal. I have taken something that I enjoy and practice myself(survival/emergency preparedness) and have used it to educate others and hopefully in the future will be able to do that on a full time basis.

I plan on following the principles put forth by both gentlemen above and build passive income that will help build future wealth and time freedom for me and my family.

In turn I will be able to pass on all I learn to my children and give them the financial education that I wish I had at their age.

Conclusion

Being financially free is a big part of survival/emergency preparedness. Having the funds and time to put into your preparedness plans is very important.

I am not completely where I would like to be with that right now, but am actively working towards it. We all have to start somewhere, so why not start now. Your future self will thank you.
